The position of the National Council of NGOs from Moldova to the destruction of architectural heritage by "socially responsible business"

Beginning with the sixth edition of NGO Forum, held at 23 to 24 June 2011, members of NGOs have expressed disapproval towards destruction of architectural monuments of national importance.

The actions of resistance to the destruction of architectural heritage were generated by demolition, on 22 June 2011, of a monument of national importance, situated at Vlaicu Pircalab Street, 71 (First Post Office of Chisinau). The monument was destroyed by "Leo Press," the shares of which are owned 50% to 50% by "Moldpresa" and the Turkish company "Summa Group."

Company "Summa Group" has undertaken, through its representative in Moldova, ICS "LeoGrant" SRL, several projects, among which is the hotel "Leogrand" and Malldova Shopping Centre. It should be mentioned that ICS "LeoGrant" is declared as a company that promotes and respects the concept of corporate social responsibility, being part of the Global Compact Local Network.

At the NGO Forum, civil society representatives, members of NGOs and journalists present at the event discussed the destruction of this monument of architecture and decided that it is necessary to take common actions for stopping the degradation of cultural and historical heritage of the city. After the NGO Forum and more discussions on social networks an initiative group was formed. It was named "Chisinau Postmen", after the destroyed building, and it was decided to organize a protest in order to seek re-building of destroyed monument and to launch a boycott of one of the business of "Summa Group" - "Leogrand" Hotel and Convention Centre.

The decision to boycott the "Leogrand" Hotel was conditioned by the fact that the services of this institution are often uses by NGOs, government institutions, embassies, international organizations, etc. Several NGOs, members of National NGO Council and National Participation Council, have decided not to use the services of "Leogrand", because this contributes to the prosperity of those who destroy the city's cultural values.

National Council of NGOs from Moldova urges all those who respect the values and laws of the country to join this cause, and not to organize and attend events from "Leogrand Hotel & Convention Center" until those who destroyed the monument of architecture from V. Pircalab Street, 71 will rebuild it and will answer before the law.
